Public Power

Providing Public Power

TVA and the 153 local power companies in our Valley region work together to make life better for the people we serve through public power. Public power means that we are not obligated to investors, and we’re not here to make a profit. Our focus is on generating reliable, low-cost electricity.

Readily Available & Efficient Electricity

TVA is committed to delivering low-cost and reliable electricity to the people and businesses that call our region home.

Growing With the Region

Over the past 10 years, TVA has invested $25 billion in our existing infrastructure and has plans to invest more than $15 billion in new generation by 2028. These plans call for building approximately 3,800 MW of new generation to meet our region’s growing demand.

Reliably Delivering Power

Energy Planning

Working in Partnership

Together with 153 local power companies, we deliver safe, clean, reliable, and affordable public power to homes and businesses throughout the seven-state Tennessee Valley region. Local power companies purchase power from TVA and distribute it to customers within their service territories.

From Plant to Plug

We help companies ask the right questions to get the power they need. Our region enjoys 99.999% reliability and the lowest industrial rates among peer utilities. TVA is developing additional resiliency solutions to enable growth while maintaining its commitment to system reliability. Here’s how it works:

Phase 1

The Tennessee Valley Authority generates and transmits electricity to local power companies or direct serve customers.

Phase 2

153 local power companies distribute power to their residential and commercial customers. TVA distributes power to direct serve customers.

Phase 3

Lights on! Our residential, commercial, and industrial customers use and rely on our reliable power.

Determine Your Electricity Use

TVA operates a 30 Gigawatt system that turns fuel from nuclear, hydro, fossil, and renewables into electricity. Our team can help you determine power requirements based on demand, energy consumption and load factor. You can also use our Power Usage Calculator to get started.
